How I Decide if a Trend is for me: GINGHAM

I've said it before and I’ll say it again – I tread carefully when it comes to new trends. The reason for this is twofold: firstly, I have an ‘all-or-nothing’ personality so as soon as I decide to buy one piece, it’s a bit like breaking the seal and I wind up wanting it all. Secondly, I always describe my style as “classic with a subtle nod to seasonal trends” so adding too many temporary bits to my wardrobe just makes it a little fussy for me. Of course, this can mean I'm sometimes late to the party when it comes to those must-blog pieces but that’s me and that’s how I roll. I mean, it’s important to stay true to who you are anyway, isn’t it?

As a result, I’m fairly systematic when it comes to deciding whether I want to buy into a new trend or not so here was my thought process for gingham:

THE SLIP DRESSthis was one of the first gingham pieces I came across as we had it in at work quite early on for AW16. I love everything about this dress but I would wear it in the exact same way I would my other midi slip dresses (layered with a top underneath or with a lightweight, demure duster draped over my shoulders) and I like to try different looks, especially when a new trend hits. Between me and you though, I do look at it every day and wonder what if?

SHORTS - a really cute and girly pair of shorts is definitely an item my wardrobe is missing but when it comes to a fresh trend, I want to wear it more often than I would shorts living in rainy England!

THE SHIRTa good, well-structured shirt is right up my street for day-to-day life and whilst I'm probably lacking a patterned shirt in my wardrobe, I think gingham was made to be a bit more fun than to be confined to classic fits.

And then I remembered Marissa Webb's amazing SS17 Ready-to-Wear collection: playing with shapes that naturally carry the gingham square well, especially when cut asymmetrically, is genius (reworked shirts are everything RN in case you didn't know!)

After that, the decision was easy: Topshop's Gingham Frill Top just had to join my closet! At first, I was so sure I was going to style it with leather for this post as I love that whole girly/tough contrast thing but then I thought why not exploit gingham's girliness to the max and add two entire ankles of ruffles?
